Day 8 ~ July 7~ another Fire!

Viana to Naverette, 14 miles, 8 hours.

Started in a small village and then went into Logrono. Very modern, very long walk through because the signs for the camino were few and far between. We saw our first lake in Spain, the park was huge and lots of people out for a Saturday BBQ, bike ride, or walk. Boy do the Spaniards love to ride. Doug and I have almost been run over too many times to count!!

The afternoon portion of our day is always long and hot this day was not an exception. We passed a huge metal bull that could be seen for miles. Still don't know why it is there. Lots of friends waiting for us as we are always arriving late! The peregrino meal of the day has been something we look forward to every day. It has a first, second, dessert course with a bottle of wine and water. We haven't had a bad meal yet. After dinner we walked back to the alburgue to find a huge brush fire behind the building. We watched as the locals tried to fight it before the firefighters and water helicopter came. It brought tears to our eyes to see the concern and panic. The fire came within a few feet of where our belongings were. The firefighters did a great job of containing it.

After a hot, horrible nights sleep, on top bunks, with stinky old men our pilgrimage continues.
